15 years ago, The University of California Irvine began “The 90+ Study” in an effort to learn what the oldest-old folks have done to live so long. Turns out, there are a few things many of them have in common that might surprise you…
Some of the major findings are:
- Drink Moderate Amounts of Coffee
- Drink Moderate Amounts of Alcohol
- Enjoy a little extra weight – What!?
There are plenty of studies where you can learn the details of why each of these things will benefit you (the last one kinda surprised me). So, I’ll just break it down in summary for you below. Something to note in the study… They found that “over 40% of people aged 90 and older suffer from dementia while almost 80% are disabled. Both are more common in women than men.” Those are scary numbers, but other studies have shown ways to prevent these things. I have a few blog posts on the benefits of strength training, and the positive effects it can have on elderly, and here’s one on what happens to your brain when you stop exercising.
The beans have antioxidant properties (heart healthy) and lots of fiber. Helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s among other things. Read more in 20+ Good Health Reasons To Drink Coffee.
Not just pertaining to wine (another surprise). In moderate amounts (about 2 glasses a day) can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, and dementia. Read more in 7 Health Benefits Of Drinking Alcohol.
I’m sorry, but I got nothin on this. I’m still reeling. Here’s a study by the US National Library of Medicine that reveals the Danger of Weight Loss in the Elderly the might add a little clarity, but I need to do a little more research on this subject.
While this study does reveal some surprises, no one study is the study to end all studies. So, do not take this as a prescription for longevity, but take it with a grain of salt. See what I did there?
Stay Strong and Earn your rest!
